KATHMANDU: US Ambassador to Nepal Peter W Bodde on Wednesday announced a grant of US Dollar 209,000 to the Teach For Nepal (TFN), a fellowship programme for university graduates in Nepal that requires them to teach in rural schools for leadership training. TFN trains and supports Nepali university graduates and young professionals to be teachers in government schools. So far, TFN has already places 50 teachers in Lalitpur and Sindhupalchok districts. The US Embassy was supporting the programme since its launch a couple of years ago.

TFN is planning to launch its programme in Dhanusha district next year.
"This year’s larger grant will help Teach for Nepal operations to expand beyond Lalitpur and Sindhulpalchok districts, where Teach for Nepal currently reaches 3,500 children across 100 different classrooms," the US Mission in Kathmandu said in a statement today.

“As part of a larger movement to expand educational opportunity worldwide, Teach for Nepal is a national and international success story,” said Ambassador Bodde. Bodde announced the grant at a public launch yesterday with members of TFN's leadership council, representatives of the Nepal Government and supporters. The Teach For Nepal is modelled after Teach For America, established nearly 25 years ago in the US.The US Embassy had provided US Dollar 75,000 to the programme in 2013.
