Nepali women's team scales Mount K2

KATHMANDU, JUL 26 - A three-member Nepali women's team successfully scaled Mount K2 (8,611m), the world's second highest peak , in Pakistan on Saturday afternoon, setting a new world record for the country.

The members of the "first Nepali Women K2 Expedition-2014"--Maya Sherpa, 35, from Okhaldhunga, Dawa Yanjung Sherpa, 25, from Dolakha, and Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, 29, from Solukhumbu district--conquered Mount K2 at 3:35pm local time, according to a statement released on Saturday.

This is the first successful ascent of a women's team on K2 that is considered deadlier than Everest by the mountaineering community.

The expedition was supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. On May 21, the ministry organised a special function to bid farewell to the team, which was climbing with the motto 'women climbing for climate change' to raise awareness on global warming.

Himalayan Women Welfare Society, in coordination with the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Environment, and Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal Mountaineering Association, Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, and the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development supported the team.
